Sculptor David Holmes has been creating exceptional works of art primarily in wood and stone since 1960. Recently, in response to demands from his clients, he is reproducing his works as limited editions in bronze.

In 1968 David and Jane Holmes moved from Cape Cod to a hilltop in Plymouth, Maine and 'Wolfscrag Sculpture' was born. The artist, blessed with innate natural artistic ability, is largely self-taught. Learning as he went and employing the skills of this ancient craft handed down through the years he has created many important commissions:

• Creation of a landmark Maine sign in Portland, documented in a nationally released film titled,"Seasons of a Craftsman". (1974)

• Entrance sign to John F. Kennedy memorial in Hyannis, Mass.

• 8' carved wooden eagle - New Hampshire State House

• Maine's Coat of Arms (State Seal) - Governor's office in Augusta, Maine, including relief carved pineapple over the entrance door (1972)

• Gilded signage throughout Maine Center for the Arts, Orono, Maine

• Life sized carved wooden mermaid and dolphin sculpture - Jameson Elementary School, Old Orchard Beach, Maine

• 10' x 10' carved and painted wooden mural - Mercer Elementary School, Mercer, Maine

• Exhibition of the Artist's work in Wimbledon, England. The artist worked alongside a stone restoration firm in Southern England during this time.

• A wide variety of carvings in both stone and wood for businesses and residential sites throughout Canada, U.S., Europe and New Zealand.

David regularly attends stone carving symposiums in New Zealand, with carvers from around the world. Some of the carvings created there can be seen on this website, while others grace New Zealand homes and businesses.

Maine's first stone carving symposium in Damariscotta, Maine, in 2004, saw the creation of "Dark Energy", a large and impressive carving, it symbolizes our celtic connection.

David Holmes continues to create stone sculpture at the studio, 'Wolf's Crag' Plymouth, Maine. Work can be viewed in the beautiful outdoor setting and visits are by appointment only.

We look forward to seeing you!

THE MYSTERY OF STYLE

There is nothing more puzzling in human nature than its lapses from the good to the bad, in style as well as in morals. Place the good and bad style side by side and the bad will often be chosen. The study of good forms, and comparisons to learn their merits are as necessary as any part of education. A sad reflection is that the good style is often more expensive than the bad, although the bad may cost more to manufacture.

One would suppose that the concentration of the manufacturers would tend to develop good taste because such concentration affords bases for comparison. But in practice the thing works out the other way. It is the lonely maker who shows genious. The more machinery the less thought in him who runs it.
